LONDON DAIRY REPORT. Mc-rs. K. (iritliths and Co., dairy produce reporters, New Plymouth, arc in receipt of the following market report from their London principals. Messrs Mills and Sparrow, dated 21st February, l'.HiS:--Sinec our I i«l we have had mild weather with considerable rain, which is very beneficial indeed to pastures, and our farmers are looking forward with hope to the coining spring. Prices for butter have maintained the high level last reported, but there has been a considerable shrinkage in the demand, as all retailers have at last advanced their prices, which has had the effect of checking the demand, so that the knowledge of 90,000 boxes landing from the colonies this week and the check in the demand has caused buyers to hold off, and very little business has transpired. It is difficult to say how markets will run for the next three or four weeks, but it is a fact that supplies are going to be very light, and w e should not *>e_ surprised to sec high prices maintained. It cannot be expected, however, that the recent exorbitant rates of 150 a can be maintained, and we would not be surprised when buyers once more come into the market to'find a considerable reduction will have to be made in the price to effect sales. Danish—Owing to the high rates of colonial, and prices) running practically as high as Banish, considerable orders were thrown on to the latter description. The consequence has been that the Danes hate put on a bold front and still further advanced their price one kroner (1 8 2d).
Siberian—Arrivals continu c very light indeed, prices ranging from 140s to" 14«s. French—The higher prices that have been quoted brought 30 to 40 per cent. more butter during th e last two weeks, although quantities still remain light, and our latest intormatiou is that 110 more can be spared, and that prices from that quarter are likclv to lie fully maintained.
American—High pries u,uallv bring lmtter from America., whore they arc m the habit of carrying largo stocks and a further 9000 l» IW were -hipped last week, which has had the cllect of lining up buyers or" this description, and there is a distinct pause. During the last two or three days there haV been very little doing, and at the moment it is difficult to say that prices will rule when business recommences on this description.
Australian—The butters per s.s. Jlougola and Essex commenced landing on Monday, and some sales were made, but immediately found there were butters to spare they held off th e market, and for the last three or four days very little business has transpired, and a fair quantity will have to be carried over. Supplies for next week arc exceedingly small, and no doubt buyers will have to operate as usual, but it is difficult to say what the basis of price will be, and we should not be surprised to see considerable concessions.
Xew Zealand—Some of the butters just landed per lonic have made record prices, but there has been very little business passing during the past four or five days, and considerable quantities remain unsold. It is difficult to sav to-day what the real value of Xew Zealand butter is, but it looks like lower prices next week.
Cheese.—Canadian: There is an improved tone, and valu* are Is to 2s higher on the week. Stocks of this description are ught. Xew ZealandCheese per louie have made Is to 2s more than previous arrivals, and the market clo-es quite firm. Xew riymouth. Ist April. VMtj.
