CORRESPONDENCE
THE MAYORALTY.
A PUZZLE.
To th e Editor. Sir,—As jet then- are no indications tliat the other two candidates for the Mayoralty intend following in Councillor Colli-' lead. I refer to his action in stating his view, to a public meeting and offering himself for criticism or questioning. Theft''- au old saying, "ltotter the devil you know than the! devil you don't." We know Mr. Colli-.' opinions, for he has taken the trouble jt" give us an idea of them. We don't know the other gentlemen's' view, for ! ''iey are discreetly silent. Seeing that iiey hav e nut presented themselves on the platform to be catechised, mav 1 a*k Mr. Tisch if it is true that he favors granting £IOO annually to the Technical School, and £IOO to Western Park« And is it a fact that Mr. Bellringer intends to do all he can to prevent any further money being voted frim the Council's funds for Western Park? These arc questions that should lie an-
swered, for they arc being asked and answered in the street. Is Councillor Bellringer in favor of the Borough Council pushing on the Esplanade to the beakwater!.—l am, etc., CiVIS.
We are in receipt of (lie following communication from a ilawera correspondent. We give it as it was received. What it means or deals with we have not the slightest idea. Perhaps our readers will solve the puzzle. Here it is:—
To th c Editor. 6ir,—About 5 years ago I lived neighbor to 2 people, who recently expressed themselves at variance with each other (ii I may so say). The editor of a paper and settler I was friend to both, and both were friends of mine. In the editor's concluding remarks recently published by a contemporary, I disagree and think ho is wrong and I am sorry for him as he didna see hisself as ithers see him. Note, it may be classed under 3 heads, swelled hcadednes*, hoist with his own petard, of measuring other's. wheat with his bushel. And surely the measure must of been gre.i-ed at some previous occasion so that there was something adhering inside so it gave incorrect account. We used to say look out for sovereigns, for one was found sticking once on curiosity bent. 11l refer the editor to a story he once published referring to 2 brothers going through a garden and the result of their diligence recorded one gathered golden fruit for immediate benefit which he subsequently found turned to bitterness in use; the other only gathered apparently leaves, but he subsequently iound they turned out a famous and illustrious name to be honored. Now, Sir, I will place on record I once advised a sub-editor in Wanganui not to heed another if he attempted "mudslinging," ink-slinging I called it, for he might take it for granted the ink only blinded his own office window from him seeing clearly and don't you do it. The sub-editor is principal now. Also about last November 11th please refer to
"Leaseholder's'' letter in tlie EMiain Argus and you will see though one used impudence I replied dignified and calm, as becoming one human being towards another in error. Trusting this may have the desired effect of conciliation,—l remain, etc., METAMORPHOSIS.
