SWIMMING.
o LIFE-SAVLNG COMPETITIONS,
Quietly, and without ostentation, very useful work has been done lately at the municipal swimming baths, where instruction in rescuing and restoring the apparently drowned lias been given by Mr. D. Ogilvie, the caretaker of the baths, to pupils from the West End Sehoul. This instruction may at some future date be the niealis of saving life. Competitions were held yesterday, with I Dr. Fookes as judge. He expressed himself as eminently satisfied with the I work done, and was sorry that slight slips prevented bis awarding the maximum marks in the eases of two pupils. The competitions were for gold medals presented by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming ' Association. Messrs. G. Tisch and P. S. Wbitcombe attended as representing the Education Board. Mr. Lints acted a- timekeeper and Mr. Ogilvie as starter. The following are the results, 80 points being the maximum:—fiirls: Nora Crozier, 72 points.
