"MARTYRS AT THE STAKE." MR. REID ON THE STRIKE. Srdnev. March 31. The Employers' Federation has resolved that it is prepared to confer with strikers under certain conditions. Mr. Reid, referring to the strike, said trade unionism was one of the greatest developments in the way of safeguarding the rights of the people; but however good their object, there was a power above the employers and the trade unionists—the power of the conscience of the whole community, which would not allow acts of intolerance and injustice. He compared the non-union-ists to the martyrs at the stake. The fires which had destroyed the martyrs of old had lit the tire of liberty which ought to secure for men and women of the twentieth century the right to assert their freedom of choke in all lawful matters.
