TIIK XGAMOTU CLUB. 'i'he annual meeting ol' the Ngamotu Golf Club was held on Saturday evening. Over thirty members were present. Mr. ■]. I'aton, club captain, presided. The report congratulated the club on i its continued progress. The season hail 1 been very satisfactory in every way, and play had, as usual, been possible for the full twelve months. The bal-ance-sheet showed that the gross receipts roughly were £235 from ail sources, and the expenditure only .6223, thus reduciug the bank overdraft uy over t-3M. The membership was as follows: —l'layers, men 53. ladies 41; honorary, men (i, ladies 14. It was satisfactory to be able to state 'hat, although tlie club had lost a. large number ol members, their places had generally been tilled by newcomers. The club's second amateur championship tournament held last Kaster had proved a great success. It was hoped that this meeting would become a recognised event in gulling circles in Xew Zealand, as the local standard of play must be materially benelited by the' visits of leading players from other parts. Arrangements for this year's tournament were in the hands of a. subcommittee. At the last annual meeting, after a keen debate among the members, it hail been decided by a bare majority to charge at the rate of threepence per cup for afternoon tea during the season. The innovation hail proved un entire success, the members almost without exception preferring it to the old style; whilst of the £3O reduction in the overdraft the afternoon tea fund had provided about £2O. During the season several important improvements to the links had been made. The majority of the greens had been treated with weed-killer, and it was anticipated that this season would see litem greatly improved for putting. The balance sheet stated the excess of assets over liabilities at £B7 5s 4d.
Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. A. Staudish; vice-presi-dents, Dr. Walker, Messrs. L. W. Alexander, 11. Bayly, E. T. Morshead, and C. H. Burgess; captain, Mr. F. S. Johns; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. I'aton; committee, Messrs. A. H. Glasgow, L. Hansen, C. Gray, It. Scott, H. B. Aruiitage, J. IS. S. Medley, Burgess, and Jones; auditor, Mr. (J. li. Weston.
Mr. 11. 11. Ward introduced the question of tlie mode of playing the championship. Mr. .Johns considered the present system was not satisfactory, lie suggested that some means should be devised for making a more thorough test of the players' respective powers. Under the present system it was quite possible for one oi the best men to be put out by an inferior player through having a single "off-day." A "Yankee" tournament or some such system would give a better test.
Mr. Paton favored the present.system, lie thought match play was the truest test.
A motion in favor of the present system was moved pro forma by Mr. War I and seconded by Mr. Steeds, but was not pressed to a vote.
Mr. I'. 11, Addenbrooke suggested to the committee to provide a championship roll board for the ladies.
Saturday, loth April, was selected as opening-day.
