TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Wellington Pony and Galloway Club's second meeting took place on I -Saturday in beautiful weather, and drew a great attendance. Auckland horses won four races, Dr. truest winning the two principal stakes, Balgonie and Herculean scoring in other events. Dr. Quest was thrown into the big race with 0.5, old Inspiration being called upon to concede the Soult gelding a stone. These ponies (lid not meet last
season, but, taking a line through Ruataniata, who defeated both at a difference of 81b at the Auckland Trotting Club's meetings, it can easily be seen that Dr. Quest was very leniently treated by Mr, Bigwood at Miramar. Although Inspiration won a double at. the opening meeting of the Wellington I'ouy t 'lub in February last, it was on y the poorness of the other runners that
gave the little daughter of Freedom a chance to distinguish herself. She started three times last season and did not even gain a place on either start, but JDr. Quest ran two good seconds to Mighty Atom and Octoroon respectively. Balgonie, who won the Trial Handicap with ridiculous ease, is a three-year-old filly by Phoebus Apollo, and wa9 in at the minimum. Herculean, who made no race of the Seatoun Handicap, is a tour-year-old daughter of Soult from Prestoria. The Wellington Club's handicapper seems to have a poor opinion 01 Auckland ponies, but after Saturday's exhibition should hold them with more respect. It almost seems as if the new flub is trying to attract Northern horses and is prepared to take little
heed of their past performances as long as it can draw them into the Miramar fold.
ilot favorites won live out of the six events, and the thirtytwo pencillers doing business were put oil the direct road to ruin. The public had a good time, and apparently knew more than the elnb's haifdicapper.
The Kosehill t up, which ill*. 1). O'Brien's colt Maranui won on Saturday la-L was the first decent race that lias come his way, and now that the disappointing son of Malatua has struck form it is to be hoped he will show up prominently at Randwick next month, when the Australian J.C. Autumn Meeting rolls round. Melodeon, Putty, and Waipuna were the other New Zealanders engaged in the Kosehill Cup. Maranui won easily by three lengths, the cablegram tells us, and the mile and a-c|tiar-tc-r was left liehiml in 2min 8 sec. Lady Eame, who ran third to Maranui and Absentee, won three races last season, besides running second to Realm in the City Handicap at tile A.-J.C. April meeting.
Starina, Waihuka, Colden Eagle, Paritutu. and Claremont have be«n entered for the minor events at the Auckland li.C. Autumn Mcetiug.
