FREE PLACES IN SECONDARY

SCHOOLS. Per Press Association. Wellington, Friday. A modification of the system of awarding free places in secondary schools is announced by the Education Department. In future it proposes to accept, if desired, in lieu ol the whole or part of the senior free placos examinations, recommendations of the principals of schools based upon work done by candidates for senior free places during their course as junior free pupils and supported by such evidence as that of tho pupils' laboratory or workshop notes ami by any reports received from Inspectors. The method appears to be particularly applicable to such subjects as the brandies of handwork and the i branches of Scionce, such as physics and I chemistry.
