LIGHTING FIRES.

AN UNCOMMON CAISE,

Per Press Association. Dannevirke, Last Night. A case of interest to farmers was decided by Magistrate McCarthy to-day. During the recent bush iirea in the Wftber district 0110 settler took advantage of the wind to light a lire to light one approaching. After three days the wind changed, and the tires followed the original course, extending to a property of a neighboring one, causing damage to the extent of £299 19s. After a lengthy hearing, lasting all day, the Magistrate gave judgment for .0100 damages, holding that the farmer in lighting a Are on tlie adjoining property was responsible for plaintiff's loss, although thero were many other fires in the district. The Magistrate expressed the opinion that legislation should be passed providing for the regulation of Are lighting. He pointed out. that many bush settlers and Crown tenants were compelled to cleßr bush, and burning was the only practical way.
