LAND HUNGER.

IN AUCKLAND DISTRICT.

Per Press Association, Auckland, Last Night. Despite the fact that under the new Laud Laws Amendment Act, preference is given to applicants who are landless, the number applying for Crown land thrown open for selection is in 110 way lessened. Applications closed at the Auckland Lands Office yesterday for an area of 10,!l9u acres open for selection, and the total number of applications received was just 700. The land in question is situated chiefly in the Kawhia and Waitomo counties. The Land Board sits on Monday morning to conaider the applications, and 011 Tuesdav a ballot will be ttken. Preference will in all cases be given to tlmse who are landless.

Uunedin. Last Night. Applicants in connection with the Parmata settlement of 3080 acres totalled 80, who put in 10!) applications for nine farms. Six applicants have boon rejected, the Board not considering them entitled to be classed as landless. The majority of the applicants are residents of Otago, but there are several from Canterbury, one from Wellington, and one from iLartinborough. The ballot takes place to-morrow at }0 a.m.

The Otago band Board gave its decision to-day in the case of W. C. Pitches, who had lieeu called upon to show cause why his lease over a small grazing nun in the Tiger Hill district should not be forfeited for non-fulfil-ment of conditions. The Board decided to forfeit the lease, and that the section be again offered for selection burdened with valuation for improvements in favor of Official Assignee as representing Pitches' creditors.
