OBITUARY.

THb DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE. London, March 24. The Duke of Devonshire died at Cannes from heart failure. Received March 25, 0.10 p.m. London, March 25. The Duke of Devonshire succumbed to pneumonia, contracted in Cairo and aggravated by fatigue on Hie journey to Cannes. King Edward sent a message of condolence to the Duchess. The newspapers pay warm tributes t» the deceased nobleman. The Chronicle describes the late Duke as a great Englishman. There are many signs of mourning in the localities wherewith the Duke ot Devonshire was associated. Lords Ripon, Lansdowne, and Rosebcry, in the House of Lords, and Mr. Asquith and Mr. Balfour in the House of Commons, paid tributes to the late Duke, mentioning his sincerity o£ conviction and devotion to duty. A MARK OF RESPECT. Received March 25, 10.50 p.m. Loudon, March 25. On the motion of Lord Rosebcry, the House of Lords adjourned as a mark of respect to the late Duke of Devonshire.

As Marquess of Harrington he was a prominent figure in British po-i litics. He held many important offices in several Ministries. In 1803 he was Lord of the Admiralty, from 1868 to 1871 Postmaster-General, from 1871 to 1874 Chief Secretary of Ireland, from 1880 to 'IBB2 Secretary for India, from 1882 to 1885 Secretary for War. Ho held a Beat in the House of Commoss from 1857 to 1891. It was in 1891 that lie succeeded to the Dukedom.
