CALF INOCULATION.

To tlie Kilitor. Sir, —Will vou kindly allow mc a little space to air a grievance against the Stock Department for loss sustained by myself and others in this district through the posl|H)nement and lateness of inoculation. Over two months ago word was sent up that the Stock Inspector would be in the district to d J the calves on a certain day in that week. For some unknown reason lie did not come, and several drove calves to the appointed place for nothing. This was bad enough, but when the dry weather set iu and grass was needed lor the cows I for one had to put mine out to graze tor the simple reason that the law forbid* anyone selling a calf that w not inoculated, even though—as is the case in this district —there has never been a Known case of blackleg. The upshot of the whole matter is this, Mr Editor—when after considerable enquiries the Inspector turned up. about two weeks hack, calves had fallen lo half the value they were two or throe weeks before. Jt simply means that those like myself who are forced to sell now must' accept from seven to ten shillings for calves six months old tli.it would have realised from fifteen sellings to a pound three months ago, besides having to keep them through the drought. It is a matter 1 think might easily have lieen obviated, as the present way of depending on one man for Sfl.ooo calves must cause loss and inconvenient to someone.—l am, etc.. E.J.F.X. Mangoiei. 21/3/ W.
