The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner at London, dated March 21:— Frozen meat There is a scarcity of prime quality mutton, and holders are firm. Trade is very disappointing. Doing only from hand to mouth. Following are current quotations:—Canterbury 4%d, North Island 3"/ B d, River Plate 3%d. Australian ;i'/ 4 d. The laiub market is firm. There is good demand for all brands, although high prices are restricting business. Canterbury is quoted at .V/sd, oilier than Canterbury SV-iL There it, better demand for beef, especially for hindquarters, which are quoted at 3%d, forequarters 2 7 / s d.

Butter—Some holders of butter are forcing sales and a "liear" movement is reported: Out such action is considered unwarranted, laglit shipments of 1 Hitter are expected, and none is held in stock. There 1- general and active demand. Choicest New Zealand butter 113», Australian 1 UK. Danish 120s tier cwt.

C'beese—The market is dull. Complaint is received of the immaturity and openness in New Zealand brands. White makes are quoted at .s!)s, colored tt tils per cwt. Hemp—There are ~igns of improvement in the hemp market. With :i better demand, the following are the current quotations:—Hood fair grade on the spot £24, fair grade on the spot £2l 10s, fair current Manila £24. April and May shipments—Good fair grade £23 lOs, fair grade £2l 10s.
