TL'KF TOPICS.
(By "Moturoa"), A Sydney paper, in referring to Mr. \V. Lyons' purchase of Waipuna. expresses surprise at the horse beinj; bought for 470 guineas, and winds up with the remark that as a rule New Zealanders undervalue neither their horses nor themselves. The amateur rider, Mr. I.;. .). Thursby. is to have the mount on Sir Archibald in the English Derby. Mr. Thursby rodo the Isinglass horse John o' Gaunt into second place in Hie race for the Derby of ]!>IM, won by St. Amant, and also'rode Melon when lie was second in the Derby to Spearmint. Writing after the Futurity Stakes, "Terliii-a" in the "Australasian' said:—" Beaut en but not disgraced must be the verdict as regards Mountain King. Burdened with 1511). over wciglit-lor-age, the big fellow was the hist off, IHldj bad to go on the outside of hi;
field. He got anything but a good run, and was being hard ridden below the distance. He struggle on with the greatest gameiiess, but could not catch An-tonio-in fact, he only just beat Munjeet and Seolland. The performance of Scolland makes the Newmarket Handicap look like a very g„„d thing for him. I W hat a change has liecn worked in this - horse since he ran in the Ilotirko llaudil cap last year, lie now looks a hi", > strong horse, just the sort to make a s good stallion. Some people would have i il that he did not look trained. II« 1 ilid in il -li-ike me that way. Years ago John Eden Savill showed lis that liors"s could be turned out lit to run, and still be 'big and strong.' This is the way with Scotland. All doubts about his getting to the post for the Newmarket Handicap were. I believe, at an end before la-t Saturday. Ho carried a bundago on the near foreleg, but the trouble has been tender feet. R. O'Connor has had Scotland nearlv a vear, and there is no doubt he has worked a wonderful change in him. TTe was always fast, but things went wrong in some way „r oilier, and to-day will probably see bim lit for the first time in his ! life. He is very quick out of the barrier, and 1 cannot pick upon any boise with a chance of Vating him this aft.-r----noi.ii. Had luck may beat. Scotland, as it did Rc.olnle. but the Wallace horse looks as nearly a gilt-edged certainty as you can get in racing." (Scotland won the Newmarket.—"Moturnn.")
