FIRES.
j Per Press Association. Auckland, Thursday. A two-storied house at Onelumga,' oc- ' cupied by Mr. Wadham and family, was destroyed by lir e this morning. A son ' and daughter of Mr. Wadluiu, who were asleep upstairs, had a narrow escape. The girl, when being lowered from a window by a rope, fell and injured one arm. Mr. Wadham was awakened at 2 o'clock by a crackling noise. H e opened his bedroom door and was met by a rush of smoke. He shimmed the door and called his daughters who had been hwakened by their mother's screams. The Haines had a good hold, and the Staircase was a burning mas*. Escape by that means was cut oil'. The two girls went to their brother's room, and all with difficulty made their exit from the upper window by a rope. Both the girls and their brother were burned I ahout the lace and hodv. The injuries of Ivy Wadham are somewhat serious. The family escaped in night : ,ilire. The furniture was insured for .clou, and the ■building for C; 100 in the Victoria office.

Auckland, Last Sight. A lire was discovered in the port [ bunkers of the .Northern C'o.'s steamer Waitmigi this morning wliiio the vessel was at Opononi.. It was soon extinguished. The lead and copper pipes were biirji't through, but there was no other damage. Repairs are being effected today, and it is expected dial the steamer will leave Opononi to-morrow afternoon for Oiiehunga.
