The District Health Oliicer reported oil the inspection of premiss in Devon street en*t. ill the neighborhood of which a ease of enteric had le-uited. He stated the present slate of t li • dunnage was in a very insanitary rondiiion. and recommended that some means be taken to place (he drainage in a more satisfactory condition.—Referred lo the Drainage Committee. Permission was granted the Kgmont Lodge, 1.0. G.T., to stretch a calico sign across Devon street, at their own risk.

The report of the Drainage Committee, already published, was adopted. The following clause in the Works! Committee's report brought forward, some discussion:—"That, whilst recognising the ability of the borough foreman, and without reflecting on him in any way, the committee recommend*, solely lor the purpose of terminating the present dual control, that the resolution parsed on 9th April, HHNi, placing the foreman iu charge of all roadwork. etc.. be rescinded, and that the borough foreman and hi* .-tall' be phu-nl under the control of the borough engineer a* from Jst April." Jlis Worship explained that the wording of the recommendation fairly .stated the po-iiion. The Council all recognised that the foreman, since lie took over the control of very bail Toads, had done excellent work, and he had no doubt the foreman would continue to give the same clo>e attention to his work under the engineer. He understood the foreman was quite agreeable to the change, which would overcome the existing dual control.
Cr. Mills thought it would be more satisfactory to Jiold the foreman responsible for the roads, as at present.
Some discussion ensued on the committee's recommendation that Mr. A. J. Mcintosh's offer to sell part of the Taranaki Hotel site for an extension ol (iill-street cannot at the present juncture be entertained.
An amendment, that .Ml'. Mcintosh be asked to hold his oll'er open for a month, was defeated, and the report of the committee adopted. The Electric Light Committee's report was adopted. The rejnirt of the Finance Committee, recommending, inter alia, the writingoff of a few small amounts of water rates, was adopted.
It was resolved that the owners of the right-of-way adjoining the Victoria Boarding-house in Liardet-street he requested to put the crossing in order. Cr. Cattlcy. drawing a lesson from the recent holocaust in America, asked that the engineer he requested to inspect the various schools, especially the Convent, ' and Other buildings where children Tire housed in numbers, with a view to keeping the fire-escape facilities up to date.
The reports of the various heads of departments were adopted, and the Council rose at 0 p.m.
