During the week Messrs Slack Bros., the well-known pedigree stock breeders, received delivery from the quarantine station, Wellington, of a recently imported large black Devon sow, which gained the reserve championship at the Royal Show last year. While in quarantine the sow gave birth lo a litter of 17 young ones. In this connection 1 Slack Bros, made strong complaints! against the—authorities. They allege that owing to lack of suitable stye accommodation at Soauies Island, i;t of the litter were killed, representing a serious loss in the strain, and a monetary loss of over £SO.

A PERILOUS ADVENTURE.

Auckland, Saturday

The West End Rowing Club's crew, which won the Dewar Shield at the Rotorua regatta, had a perilous adventure in the harbor last evening. When they were returning to their shed, after a spin, a heavy sea swamped the gig. The accident happened not far off Shelly Beach beacon. The coxswain (H. Elliot) who is an expert swimmer, struck out for the shore. The sea was getting very rough, and darkness setting in, Ellilt became alarmed. Though the gig had drifted a long way off the shore, the crew having stood by the boat for 'fear ol losing it, one of the four (F. Baker) swam to the rescue. He is a powerful swimmer, and it was due to his magnificent effort that the coxswain owed his life, for when Baker reached him Elliott was completely exhausted. O. Tyler, of All Black fame, at considerable risk vowed in n dingy and brought both men wifely ashore. ' A dingy from a yacht rescued throe of the crew who

had stuck to the gig. which, owing to •the roughness of the sea, was abandoned.

TRADE WITH NEW HEBRIDES. Dunedin. Last Night. In the course of an interview regarding the convention signed on December 2 by England and Franco respecting trade. in the New Hebrides, Dr. Rowie, missionary of the Presbyterian Church, who is in charge of the hospital at Ambvim,urged that New Zealand should extend facilities to British planters in the New Hebrides, with a view to attracting trade from that quarter, and encouraging British settlement in the Group.
