Exceptionally heavy rains have fallon between Roma and Cuniiamoola, and the rivers are in ilood. Much of the country is submerged and the railways are blocked.

llcocived March 11, 11.35 p.m. Melbourne, March 0. Two members of the Senate and six members of the House liave declined to draw the extra £2O salary voted in August last.
CRIMINALS SENTENCED. Received March (i, 11.35 p.m. Sydney, March 6. Three men convicted c-f receiving the. proceeds of a jewellery robbery as cabled on ttth January have been sentenced, two to live years' and the other to three years' hard labor.
QUEENSLAND POLITICS.
Brisbane, March (i. The Premier, Mr. W. H. Kidston, is trying to make arrangements by which the Labor Party will engage to support Wm. It is reported that the Labor members are driving a hard bargain.
AUSTRALIAN EXHIBITION. Hobart .March fi. The Federal Premier, Mr. A. Dcakin, opened the Australian Natives' Association's exhibition. He urged the people nf the Common weal l.!i to support native industry whenever it was possible. The™, exhibits include a quantity from Xew Zealand.
DECREASE OF CRIMINALS. Melbourne, March fl. The Chifcf Secretary for Justice states that the gaol population of Victoria is fiOB less thaii It was 32 years ago, though the population in this time lias increased by half a million. The Government has had to close the gaols in three centres. One has l>cen turned into a butter factory.
THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Sydney, March S. The manager of the 'New South Wa|es team of athletes who co«>i>eted at Hobart says: "The New Zealanders came prepared for business. They we"re wonderfully up-to-date. Their manager handled them splendidly." With referI ence to the meeting arranged between New Zealand and Sydney University teams, it is announced that athlete's from Queensland will also participate. The events include 100 yds, 300 yds, 880 yds, and probably one mile fla't races, 120 yds liurdle race, and broad jump. Much interest attaches to the contests between Barker and Tremliath and between Mackay and Frawlcv.

The Mount Lycll smelting returns from January 30th to February 20tli inclusive show that 32.120 lons'of <uv were treated in addition to 12-10 tons of nurchased ore. This yielded 721 tolls of bitted cop|K-r. containim;: Conner. 712 lons silver .10.1)58 minces, gold 1833 ounces.
