GRASS FIRES.
LOSSES IN KAWIIIA. Per Press Association. Auckland, 'Friday. Mr. McKcnzie, Crown Lands Commissioner, has just completed a tour of Kawhia district. He states that, some thousands of acres have been swept by fire. Teranomorc and the Oparau valley suffered most, the latter being practically burnt, out. Many settlers must sacrifice their stock on a falling market. Dairy farmers suffered severely in many cases. Mr. McKcnzie was surprised at the splendid courage with which settlers faced their misfortunes.
OUTBREAK IN XOiSTii AUCKLAND. Whangarei, Last Night. Serious grass fires at Whatatiri are causing much destruction and discomfort. Already the clearings of ten settlers have been cleared bare, and a number of sheep perished. Cattle owners managed to get 1000 head into the shelter of distant bushes. Over 2000 acres have been left as barren as a desert. A six-roomed house, recently built, and owned by Mr. Telfer, was totally demolished. Unless heavy rain intervenes, the lire will continue for some miles further to the Wairua river. Two men who were cut off yesterday made a perilous dash into safety.
