'The big lire of the previous month had demonstrated the absolute need of a body of lire police, which would have saved many thousands of pounds worth.of property. Many premises were broken into and looted ill j times of lire, and it was most desirable that the salavgc work should be done by people who were recognised.

FIRE. Dunedin, Wednesday. Tlus actual scene of the outbreak last night was the rear portion of a threestoried building on the 3011 th side of the .Mutual Stores building, occupied by Blackic, photographer. The lire, it appears, hud been smouldering some tune'. It proved to be extremely difficult at llr.st to get nt the seat of the tire, and It was only after the hose had been extended lip over the front buildings and the space between the two walls bridged by a ladder that water could be pourcit into the burning building. Then the lire was soon got under. Blackic's premises siilVerod a great deal of damage. The stock owned J>y .1. McDonald, whose, tailoring premises are in the building, was also damaged; also the contents of Lethaby's umbrella shop. The building was owned by Speight and Co. It was insured for £ISOO in the South British. On the stock Blackie, photographer, had £3OO in the Norwich ITnl--011. His loss is much heavier than this. McDonald, tailor, had £BOO in the Eoynl, i and Lethaby £750 in the Queensland. Their damage is easily covered.
A '• HOWIE" DUPE. Dunedin, Last Night. Recently in the judge's room at Dunedin, there took place the iinal act in j drama in which the late "Elijah" Dowie. was at one, time a prominent actor. Mr. Frederick Sutton, of Thornbury, made a will in favor of Dowie. After protracted litigation in America, the will was upset, and the result was to revive a former New Zealand will, under whk'li Mr. Sutton's relatives, except two, benefited. The Salvation Army also came in for a share. On the evidence adduced at the trial in America, the next of kin and the Salvation Army agreed to treat the will as nullity, and accordingly an application was made to Mr. Justice Williams to declare the will void, and grunt a letter of administration to a brother of deceased. His Honor made the order granting letters of administration to .Tohn Bennieworth Sutton, of Invercargill, by consent, monetary p'avment being also directed to be made to the Salvation Army. This motion also disposes of the action Hawke and Eraser v. Sutton and others.
MHLK-RKADIXU IN SCHOOLS. Auckland, Last Night. Tlii' annual report of the Auckland Scripture (iil't Association which was submitted and adopted at to-day's meeting, referred in terms of the sincerest regret to the continued disallowance of simple Bible-reading in schools, the fruits of which the committee regarded as lieing manifestly injurious to the truest welfare of the Dominion. With a painful regularity it was stated, week in and week out, cases of juvenile crime were appearing in the police courts, while such as remained hidden from the public view must of necessity be proportionately numerous.
MUNICIPAL APPOINTMENT. Weatport, Last Night. 'J lie Weatport Borough Council tonight appointed Mr. Douglas Dobson, A.M.1.C.E.,, of Masterton, to the position of Town Clerk and Borough Engineer. There were fifteen applications. SENTENOED FOR INDECENCY.
Dunedin, Last Night. At Mosgiel to-day, Walter Hughes was sentenced to one year's imprisonment on each of two charges of indecency, the sentences to run concurrently. A CENTENARIAN. Dunedin, List Night. The deatli of a centenarian was reported at to-day's meeting of the Benevolent Institution trustees, The secretary stilted that Louis Adolplms Beresfonl died in the institution during the week, aged Km. Deceased, who resided tor a numlier of years in King-street, where he carried on a second-hand shop' claimed to be well connected at Home, His one desire was to live to a hundred years, which age he reached on the 17t!i ult. Death was due to influenza and bronchitis.
