She carried lost 31b in the President's Handicap, and won in easy fashion. .Uter ou»siie carried lUst Sib" to victory in the Stewards' Handicap, beating First Mate, and being pulliid out for the next event, the Farewell Handicap, won from end to end, carrying lOst 51b to tbo end of five furlongs in luiiu j Msec, and beating Lilla, Silverstream (winner of the Shorts), The Dunce, llema, and Perchance. 13illy Young rode Pearlic in each'of her races.
Thirteen bookmakers put on the bag at the meeting for a consideration of three guineas, and all lost heavily, hit favorites scoring n every race.
Perchance, a live-year-old gelding by The Possible, aho won. n double, ajf Shannon, winning very easily on eacli occasion.
C. Price rode Perchance in each of his victories, and also had the mount on Kai Errin, who made no race of the Flying Handicap. Through an oversight no penalties were advertised in connection with wins at Shannon, and consequently Pcarlie had no difficulty in winning a treble and Perchance a double.
The Wellington Pony and Galloway Club hold their next meeting at lliraniar on Saturday, 21st March. The racehorses ]<eeside and St. Joe returned to Christclmreh on Thursday last. St. Joe 'tailed four times in Tasmania withoit; 'registering a but Leeslre scored once out of three starts.
Sid. Itcid, who rode St. Joe in the Hobart Cup, returned home last week, bringing witli his the well-known Tasmanian jockeys "W. Dunn and W. Jennings, who will be riding in the Wanganui meeting this week. Dunn headed the li*ts of winning jockeys in his State during the last two years, and Jennings is also a first-class lad. As both can go to scale at ajhout 7st !>lb they should get plenty of mounts this side of the Tassy."' The Auckland Cup winner of 1808, Uhlan, who has been doing stud duty in this province for several seasons, got into a barbed wire fence at Okato a few days ago, and met with such severe injuries that lie bad to be destroyed. Uhlan won many good rapes for the late J. J. Russell, and sired Uhlander, Uhlando. Bismarck, and a host of other good performers. The Hon. J. D. Ormoud shipped nine thoroughbred colts by the Mocraki from Wellington on Friday, consigned to Mr. F. E. Cox. one of the leading racehorse owners in Queensland. With Pink 'Un. 'Munjeet. Dusky Morn. Grenadier, Seddon, arid Captain Shannon amonjrst the starters for the Newmarket Handicap, the hopes of New Zealanders ran high, but after showing up for a while, DuSky Morn and Mim„jeet faded out of the contest, and Cirennldiev could Only run second to the flying Scotland, who at latest reports was a red-hot favorite. The failure of Munjeet and Dusky Morn must have cost New Zcalanders a bit of money, and the crowd who boomed Dusky Morn as a 1.32% horse have been badly left at the post. The brilliant victory of Apologue in the Essenden Stakes comes as pleasing news to sports throughout the Dominion, but the defection of Tartan, the champion 'Stralian stayer, robbed the race of a deal of interest. .
