NATIVE CONFERENCE.
MAORI GIRLS AS DOMESTICS. Per Frees Association. Auckland Last Night. At the Te Aute Association's Conference Air. J. Thornton referred to the resolution passed at the last conference In favor of the employment of Maori girls as domestic servants, and again raised the question. Rev. Bennett said that he was opposed to the experiment as a whole, though the main principle of providing another avenue of employment, was good. He could see a grave danger unless the greatest care was exercised in placing the girls in good I Christian houses, Dr. Eangi Hiroa was also opposed to making educated girls from Hukarere and yietoria Girls' College domestic servants. [The Hev. Maunsell said that the experiment was very risky, but those who had drawn up the resolution had carefully guarded against risk by specifying the kind of household. He referred to the steps taken io.'gct native girls into service at Auckland. Great" interest had been taken In the girls, who appeared very pleased with their surroundings.
| The question of running a Maori newspaper caused a good deal of discussion. One speaker pointed out that European newspapers could not reach the mass of the Maori population, and that it was necessary to have ii paper which would combine interest with utility. The Hev. Bennett said that he was instrumental in the founding of the Pipiwhnrmiroa. .At (hat time there were
many _ rival papers in the field. Now the Pipiwharauroa alone was left, and it remained with the Association to make that the one Maori paper. Mr. Te Whcora then put forward a motion, which was seconded and carried, to the eilect that the Pipiwharauroa be made the standard Maori paper.
