The death is announced of Lord Overtmra, at the age of (H, says a Press Association cable message from London. The Hons. K. "Alt-Nab and J. A. Millar leu Wellington for the South by the Maori last night. The llev. Thomas bourgeon lias, owing to ill-health, resigned the pastorship of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, says a cable message from London. The Premier, Sir Henry CampbellBiinnerinau, has developed a mild attack of inlluenza, states a London cable. However, liis strength is good, and there are no unfavorable symptoms. Later information stated that lie is improving satisfactorily. Cardinal Moran arrived at Auckland
from Sydney early on Sunday evening, lie was welcomed by clerics of the Human Catholic Cliurcli and an immense ciowd. Escorted i>y the procession, his carriage was driven to tho residence of bishop l-enihau. The scene in the town was one of immense enthusiasm. The Cardinal's carriage was rather pushed along than pulled by the horses. On ai rival at the Bishop's place, Bishop made a speech iff welcome. Cardinal Moran thanked the people of Auckland for their very enthusiastic welcome. Such a reception, he said, could not do otherwise than cement the union which from the earliest days had welded together the great diocese of Sydney and tlie diocese of Auckland. Miss M. Potts, of the West End School, is at present away on sick leave.
Their Excellencies Lord and Lady I'lunket and party returned to Wellington in the Tutanekai last night. They will stay in Wellington a few days before resuming their trip south in tlie same steamer. The party will visit the West Coast Sounds and Stewart Island. —Press wire.
.Mr. Frederick Cooper, seedsman and nurseryman, died on Sunday night nt bis residence, Lower Mutt, aged 'O7 years. Mr. Cooper arrived in Wellington with his parents in 1842. When tlie gold rush broke out in Otago he went south to try his fortune there, and he also spent some time on the Ballarat goldlields. On his return to New Zealand he settled down in Wellington, marrying the only daughter of Robert Holt, carpenter, of that city. He established a business as a seedsman and nurseryman in Wellington about forty years ago.—Press wire. f Jlr. Ernest P. Kenton, a recent arrival from the United Kingdom, for over six. years a student of tne Cork School of Arts,-and also a student of the Goldsmiths' College, London, has been appointed art instructor at the technical schools under the Taranaki Education Board and at the New Plymouth High School. Mr. Fenton bears excellent testimonials, Jlr.- W, A. Mulligan, the principal, writing of hiin that in 1007 he "was "the most advanced student in tho school." It is worth noting that among the '"students" were over a dozen quail-, tied teachers engaged under the Department for Technical Instruction. He holds lirst-class South Kensington passes iu geometry, model drawing, shading, perspective, memory drawing, blackboard, modelling, life, painting (oils and colors), anatomy, design, and drawing from the antique, lie has also had a good deal of experience in teaching both elementary anil advanced classes in schools of art mid secondary schools. Ml. I'enton will take up his duties upon the reopening of the Xew Ply- | mouth Technical School in the second week in .March.
