McDonald. MKDICAL Rlvl'l H!T. Dr. Loatham reported that during ■tanuary ;U patients were admitted to the Hospital, 33 wore discharged, font' died, and there were 30 in the institution, OLD PKOI'LE'S lUI.MK, Mr. A. E. Farrar, manager, ropurteil that there had been two deaths at the Home during the month, and there had lieen two new admissions. The general health was good, and discipline got,!. There were now 25 inmates (21 men and 4 women). THE ISOLATION WARD.
l)r. Frengley, District Health Ollicer. reported having inspected the accommoution provided at Xew Plymouth fur tlio reception and treatment of infectious diseases, and considered the acriiiniuoda.tion was unsatisfactory, consisting only Of two wards, with scullery and hath and lavatory accommodation. The word "isolation" could not he properly applied. for the following redone— Tliou wards are too near the general hospital; they are too near the general laundrv and the cottage for the preliminary reception of cases of mental diseases, including those due to alcoholism; there are no available means to prevent tli.' infccte4 persons coming in contact with outsiders, ami at the same time to allow -uch persons when convalescing op portunities for exercise in the open-air; and. p»>haps the worst feature, the cottage at the hack of these wards, in tended originally for use hv nurses in isolation, is now occupied by nurses i ngaged in the general ward-.
The only ell'ective remedy, in Ih opinion of the Health tlflicer, was i. erect truly isolation wards - an wil-iiiui hospital—and the best position was on the knoll beyond the gully at the retr of the main building, lie would not recommend any great expense in altering the 'existing building, because at best it could only lw regarded as temporary accommodation. It would be much better to conserve all moneys possible in the direction of providing an isolation hospital on a site ami of an up-to-date character to which no exception could be taken, lie supported Dr. Uathani's suggestions for improvemen l . The suggestions are now lieing put into effect. HOSPITAL COLLECTION'S.

Mr. liurgess was of opinion that thai course would not have been pnniuctiv. of milch cash for boys look mo>l of tinlhiik to the factories. Canvassing dairy farmers themselves would ha.e been better.
