ARBITRATION COURT, Dunediri, Last Night. At the Arbitration Court to-day the metal workers' dispute was heard. Sir. Bi'een (representing the workers) said practically the conditions of work were in dispute, except a clause dealing with the status of machinists. The Union asked for an eight-hours day instead of a 48-hours week,, and for au all-round increase of wages. For holders-up, fin" or boiler work. Is per hour was asked, and for stokehole, tank work, or rivetting on shipboard. Is Ijd an hour. The employers' representative (Mr. Scott) advocated a uuiform award for the whole of New Zealand so that all employers would be on an equi-l footing. After evidence had been heard, it was agreed, on the suggestion of the president, to hold a conference regarding the whole question and .report to the Court on March 2.
In the engineers' dispute, Mr. Scott said the employers were willing to accept the Auckland award ,but Mr. Brcen said the Union had several objections to that award. On the motion of the .Mayor, it was decided that application be made to the Ciom-nor-in-Oouneil to 'leelaiv that the tire- district of W,Minylon shall now c-ase to be a fnv district.
