ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

The wound seemed to be healing, but tetanus set in. Auckland, Tuesday. Word has been received from Alarokopa of the narrow escape from drowning of eight lads—John Scott, Gibson, [ Granville, Williams, August, Lane, Bayne, and Harper. They procured a flat-bottomed boat. A wave capsized the boat, and the occupants were all thrown into the water. Bayne and Ciibson were the iirst to reach shore. Lane, ScOtl, and Williams (a Maori) clung to tile boat, which became anchored. Williams dived and cut the painter. Tlien the boat began to drift to sea. Scott saw a large shark, and called out to Williams, who said: "I have u sheath-knife. I'll settle hint." The lads speak ill high terms of the : manner in whicli Williams behaved. 11a vn: was about exhausted and was
just sinking, when lie grasped an oar thrown to him. Harper (a son of the diver who lost bis life in recovering the Kliiigamite treasure) was also nearly drowned, being caught in the backwash. A girl named Rose McGrath gave great help in rescuing the boys. Oannevirke, Last Night. This afternoon tw boys were pjaying I with what was supposed to be a dyna. mite cap when it exploded, and one boy, Tom JfcDermott, bad his fingers badly shattered and one eye nearly blown out. The lad was removed to the hospital, but there is small hope, of saving his sight. Invercargill, Last Niglit. Edward Coleman, a Glenhani settler, was driving milk to the factory this morning when the trap overturned l>y a collision with a post. Coleman fell underneath, and was killed.
