Zimmerman on the eve of his departure for Hamilton, and was held in th<. comfortable dining-ruoai of the Tariki Hotel. Mr. ,1. Knowles occupied the chair, and. after the Royal toast had been honored, the chairman proposed the health of the guesl of the evening, lie, as a near neighbor ol the genial 'Trunk" tor llie last ten year;, had had every opportunity of judging hi, merit-; and had never found him wanting (applause). He felt certain his was merely voicing the feeling of all who knew Air. Zimmerman in saying that his loss would' be much felt in'the distriet,and hoped that in the future he would now and then find time to re-visit Tariki, where he would always be sure "I a hearty welcome.
in an interval during his speech, the ' chairman presented Mr. Zimmerman with a handsome walking stick of ebony, with tortoise-shell handle, mounted wifh n silver band inscrilied "From Tariki friends, Feb., ]!)08." Mr. Zimmerman, in reply, thanked Ihe chairman for the kind Ihings he had said of him. He had had W years ill the hack country of Tariki, and hail always got on we'll with his neighbors', who 'were chiefly of his own nationality. When he 'first came to the front ho had been afraid how he would "hit it ot)"' with bis new neighbors, but lie found he got on with them even than with his old ones (applause.) He thanked them for the handsome present they had given him that evening, which he should always regard as one of his most valuable possessions. Had he realised a while ago as he did: that night, how many good friends he had in Tariki he did riot think he should hare decided to leave it. (Loud applause).
A very pleasant evening was spent m song-, and loastings. and was concluded by singing "An! Lang Syne." ■Mr. and Mrs. Sims.' (he host and hosTess. are to lie congratulated on the excellent catering, the supper provider! being unanimously voted "lirst class." Amongst the visitors from outside Tariki were Mr. W. Matthews (representing Messrs Yickers and Sloven's). Mr. .1.
