TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Canterbury Jockey Club wa-> favored with splendid weather fur the, opening day of their rummer meeting, but the attendance was small, ami the totalisator returns consequently suffered. A large number of bookmakers took out licenses, and all lost heavily. Moscow started favorite in the Trial Stakes, and won comfortably by a heal from Tremulous. Aimee Soult had no difficulty in winning the Hornby Welter from Thunderer. Sunglow, by Multiform Otterdam, made all the running in the Filly Stakes, and after staving off a challenge by Sister Anne, at the distance came on and won easily by a length and n-half. Prim was the same distance away, third, and Helmnthun next. Southern Cross lost ground ai the start for the Midsummer Handicap, but was quickly rushed to the front mil showed the way along the back, and, with Freeland, led into the straight. The latter then cried enough, and Stratagem, who had been ridden a waiting race, caught Southern Cross at the distance and won by a couple of lengths. Saga was a length and a-half away, third, and Paragon was fourth. Sir Artegal and Dabchick shpwed th> way to the straight in the Lyttelton Plate, where Husbandman showed up and won with ridiculous ease by three lengths. Sir George Clifford's luck was in/an-.l f!i)ldl)eater scored the third consecutive victory for the blue and gold clicipiers, winning by a couple of lengths from Stronghold, with All Cutis the same distancc liack, third. Jacket, a rank outsider ridden ty McCluskcy, hopped out smartly and won the Halt-well Welter from end to end. It is rumored tlint all is not well with Fleetfoot. but the Chokebore stable has a good representative in Husbandman in the Middle Park Plate. •lacket is a five-year-old mare by Crafton—Blue and Gold, and was bred in Australia. A budget of Turf Topics appeals in to-day's supplement.
