Bishop, S.M., gave reserved judgment in the ease, Inspector of Factories v. the local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Co. The question was whetehr the company's Lyttelton store in which dumping was carried on should be registered as a factory. The contention of the prosecution was that "dumping" was "packing," and that if packing for transit was done by mechanical power in the building the place should be registered as a factory. The Magistrate decided against this and dismissc the case.

A THREAT TO KILL. Dunedin, Last Sight. At Naseby to-day, David McConochie, jim., wan charged with having at Middlemarch on 21st January sent a letter, knowing the contents thereof, to Henry Bruhns, a farmer, of llyd-e, threatening to kill him. Accused was committed foi trial at Dunedin.

AN UNUABPY FAMILY. Palmerston North, Last Night. This evening's meeting of the Borough Council was one of the stormiest meetings held for a long time, the trouble arising out of the deadlock which arose in the Council recently. A number of councillors protested against what they allseed were the Mayor's unfounded charges made against them at his recent public meeting, and an acrimonious discussion followed. The Mayor accused a councillor of having forfeited his seat under the Municipal Corporations A:t, and denied that he had ever stated tint he did not care what councillors did if only they eu|>ported him. This statement led' to the Mayor calling a councillor a prevaricator oi' the truth, the councillor retorting, "You are no gentleman." The standing orders having been suspended, a heated debate followed, but eventually the ordinary business was proceeded with. A motion proposed by the Mayor was carried that nil existing committees be discharged and that a special meeting of the Council be held on the Bth instant to reappoint the committees.

INTERFERING IN A PROPOSED MARRIAGE. Wellington, Last Night. In reference to the case heard in which Mv. Justice Cooper had no jurisi dcition to interfere with a proposed marriage on the ground that the prospective bridegroom is under age, his Honor subsequently agreed to further hear the application next Friday.
