MARSHALL ISLANDS DISPUTE.
AMICABLE SETTLEMENT. Received 21st 11.43 p.m. London, January 21. The representative of Burns, Philp and Co., after conferring with Her* Dernberg, German Minister for the Colonies of the Empire, accepted £4IOO a» an honorable and amicable settlement" of the Marshall Islands dispute, prefer-, ring a cash settlement to encouraging delays and risks of arbitration. PARTICULARS OF THE NEGOTIATIONS. Received 22nd, 1.2 a.m. Sydney, January 21. In reference to the cable concerning the Marshall Islands settement, it is largely due to the good offices of Dr. Irmir, German Consul-General in Sydney. Through his representations chief; ly, Germany invited Burns, Philp andl Co. to send a representative to Berlffw to confer. After gaining the consent of! the British and Commonwealth Governments, Burns, Philp and Co. Mr Campbell, their London manager, to proceed thither and offer a settlement for lialf the amount originally claimed. Finallv the settlement was agreed upon by both sides for £4IOO, roughly one- # third of the amount of claim.
