HEAT IN AUSTRALIA.
DEATHS AND SUICIDES. Sydney, January 20. Intense heat prevails throughout the State. It is especially severe m the interior. At Deiinquin a temperature oi 110 degrees was registered. Melbourne, January 2U. The thermometer yesterday wag at 100. i'or the fifth day in succession it> exceeded IC(J degrees. This is a record; The number of deaths from heat is excessive. Eleven reported in the city during the last two days are attributed to heat. There has been u similar number of suicides during the present month, to which it is claimed the hot. weather has largely contributed. The churches yesterday were almost deserted and services were shortened owing to the heat, The Princess Theatre was closed for th<. same reason. No part of the State " escaped. At numbers of places recordß were established. At Swanhill a temperature of 121 degrees was registered.
'ANOTHER ROASTING DAY. Received 21st, 12.5 a.m. Melbourne, January 20. Another roasting day was experienced here to-day. Work generally was to at large extent stopped owing to the heat.
