SOME STARLING FIGURES.
Iletween the years 181)5 and 1907 the world's steam tonnage lias almost doubled, while the sailing fleets liave do. ('reused by ltl per cent.; but when it is considered that one steam ton is equal, for tarrying purposes, to four sailing tons, it is clear tnat the carrying capacity of the world's merchant navies has increased enormously. The increase iu the steam tonnage in the past twelve months amounts to 320. vessel*, 1,913,0K tons gross, and 1,087,475 tons net. The lion's share in the increase, as lias been Hie case for ninny years past, again falls to the account of Great Britain—namely, 894,000 tons gross and >101,00') tons net; in fact, more than half of the world's steam tonnage is under the British flag, (iermany maintains the second place, but a long way off, and then follow the other countries in the order shown in the following table, which sets • forth the quantity of steam tonnage now belonging to ten of the principal maritime countries:— Gross.
