Despite official unci journalistic; reminders, and the imposition of ft ten per cent, penalty for delay, a. large number of people liavc not yet paid their land tax. During the past few weeks the Commissioner for Taxes (Mr. I'. lleyes) has been receiving the annual pathetic explanations of people who, through various misconceptions, omitted to forward the State's tribute by the appointed time and now submit heartrending reasons why they should not be penalised in consequence. To these the Commissioner points out that the hated addition of ten per cent, after a certain date is just as truly tax an is the original exaction, and the administrator of the Act can no more remit one than the other. The work of laying down 701b steel rails on the main lines of the Dominion is being pushed on by the Railway Department as rapidly as circumstances will permit. Some hundreds of miles of 531b rails have been taken up and laid down on branch rails, replacing the 281b rails which have done duty for many years. Lust year 84'/» miles were covered with the heavy-weight rails. Similar rails have been placed on the duplicated line between Wellington and the llutt, anil a gang of men is now engaged in putting down 701b rails between Silverstream amd the bridge,
