TURF TOPICS. '" : : (By "Moturoa,"). Tho Hawke's Bay Jockey Club made a profit of ..£llOO over their summer meeting. ■> Armistice and Fontenoy (who is now sound again) will be put into work at

Wanganui shortly, The term "cup winner" counts for littlo these days. Outside the New Zealand, Auckland, and Wellington Cups, moderates seem to score frequently. During the holidays we find such poor horses as Immolation, 7.11 (Stratford). Lomaria, 7.0 (Ashhurst), Moloch, 7.12 (Wairarapa), Kiflemaid, 7.2 (Manawatu), and Tangiiuoana, 8.0 (Uangitikei), placing their names on the scrolls of cup-winners. When one turns up tho recordß and sees the names of Nonette, Marguerite, Armistice, TorUlla, Coeur-dc-Lion, and Boreas amongst past winners of these races it makes one wonder whether the cup-winners of the 1007-1908 season are not very much be-low the. champions of days gone by, The brood-mare Roie, who passed her twentieth yeaj on Christmas Day, was the dam of Miss Emmy, Rosella, and Golden Gate.

Operetta, by Mcriiwee—Varety, lias been sent to the stud, and will be mated with Signalman. Operetta raced with fair success in the Eawke'a Bay district for several Beasous and last year won twice out of a dozen starts. .

Word comes from Wanganui that Mr G. i\ Moore will probably send two or three horses across to Australia for the Victorian and Australian J.C. meetings. Dusky Morn, who has rapidly made his way into the first fligWfc jdfr New Zealand sprinters, has been nominated for the Newmarket Handicap, and, if the liandicapper treats the Sou'-West-cr gelding reasonably, he will probably measure strides with the best of 'em across the water. No doubt his m-e----senco at Flemington would cr«at« s deal of interest, and a heap of Maoriland coin would go to shorten his starting price-but I forgot: the poor old Gaining Bill prohibits that, doesn't it' That_ silly Gaming Bill j 3 really the funniest thing in the whole wide world! Percy Johnson is giving up running horses, and at a meeting of the Hawke's Bay Metropolitan Committee last weekwas granted a jockey's license, subject : to cancellation of lease of any horses he may have.

It's it great thing to be born luck and have plenty of cheek! The HawkeV, Bay Jockey Club committee considered the applications to two nersons who alleged they had torn up, evidently by mistake, their -tote" tickets on Chicane, tlie winner of the Christmas Handicap at tiie late meeting. The decretory reported that only one ticket was outstanding, and ih 0 committee resolved that the outstanding amount be paid, providing the two claimants agreed to division. A further resolution was made that in future no application for dividends be enttertained unless flic-. torn ])a rts of the totalisator ticket are produced. No doubt hundreds of winnings are lost or destroyed by accident, 01 mistake during tl lc ycllr but i( seem, s t rangl , Ihat im divide one dividend on the strength of llieir own "nerve" and with nothing "•ore tangible to prove their elai ll J. st imagine the bull-dog rush these M»o™m„.t have mde for ttat«SvS If things like that happened every day manv HIT t0 ,et h, '»' k «™ *«" put n a elmm and ecoop the pool. The commitlo* udently scouting endless trouble ahead, refuse, absolutely to adjudicate in disputes between bookmakers and their clients. Hood stakes my. being offered at the hginont meeting, and the Egmont Cup of .lOOsovs. and Atkinson Stakes of 200 sovs. should attract local horses, and Aiieklandors who will 1„: working down to (he Wanganui meeting which opens a fortnight later. TJapfond, who van info third place in (be Xcw Zealand Cup. h reported to be doing good work at Iticearton, and, barring accidents, the Finland gelding will start in the Wellington Cup.
