SENSATIONAL INCIDENT.
o LIFE-SAVING CARNIVAL, NEARLY TURNED INTO A TRAGEDY Recoved 13th, 1.8 a.m. Sydney, January 12. A" life-saving carnival, the outcome of the recent beach fatalities, arranged at Newcastle, provided a sensational incident. < •<)-•,
While the members of the Manly Life Saving Club.were giving a display in a pilot boat, the crew of five, who were stationed in the surf in readiness for the event, were accidentally capsized in the heavy rollers. The spectators and other Swimmers, thinking the incident to be part of the programme, took little notice until the men clinging to the boat were exhausted. Visiting life-savers then vainly attempted to reach them, and the rock'et brigade also failed to get a line out. Eventually the men were rescued tn a distressed condition while drifting out to sea by a boat fishing In the vicinity.
