BAND CONTEST.

A press wire state* that owing to continued iluiee, Conductor Criditon, of Ibe Wanganui Garrison Baud, who is siufering ironi nervous breakdown, bad dehniteiy decided to abandon all idea ol competing in the test selections at the >ew Plymouth contest. Several members will compete in the solo competitions. Messrs. K. Smith and Co., London, publishers of the Champion Brass and Reed Band Journal, through their Hew Zealand agent, Mr T. Herd, Wellington, have kindly donated the quick-march "Undaunted" by J. H. Markham, for performance by the massed bands at the Contest on 25th February.

THE PROGRAMME. The following is the order of events in the Band Contest:— February 21th (Monday)— Baritone solos and ffugel horn solos; evening, quartettes. February 25th (Tuesday)— Morning, tenor trombones; afternoon, garden party; evening, B flat cornets. February 28th (Wednesday)—E flat ban, Bflat bass and BB flat bass solos, G trombone solos; evening, first test selection. February 27th (Thursday)— Morning, euphonium solos; afternoon, quickstep; evening, trios. February 28th (Friday)-E flat cornets, tenor horns; evening, final test selection.

Special prises were allotted as follow*):—GoM medal presented by the New Zealand Clothing Factory, for the conductor of baad gaining most points for music In quick-step competition; baton, presented by Mr J. W. Copithorne. to be awarded to winning band of "A" grade section; Collier and Colonial Piano Company's gold m«ial to conductor of the band winning the test selection in "B" grade.
