METHODIST CONFERENCE.

Per Freßs Association, Dunedin, Last Night. At the Primitive Methodist Conference, the retiring president, Rev. C Ward, gave an eloquent address on Weals of the Church." He referred to the arrival of the Rev. A. Harding and of the Rev. J. Flanagan, and gave much valuable historical information, both of the- history of the church and of the Dominion. The words on the early settlers and preachers evoked great enthusiasm. Tt was decided to put the address in the church paper. A debate took place on the questiou of union, introduced by .Mr. 0. Froggatt luvereargill, who moved that the time was opportune for the Conference to take steps so that all members of the church of six months' standing have an opportunity of voting on the question, the motion was seconded by Mr W King, Dunedin.

Mr. C. 15. Bcllringer, of New Plymouth, moved an amendment that the Conference reaffirm and desires union with the Methodist Union in New Zealand on such basis as may be reasonable by mutual concessions and compromises. At the same time, the Conference is of opinion that to endeavor at the present time to formulate a basis that will meet with acceptance and consummate a full and happy union would be futile until the day arrives, when it should be possible for two churches to discuss the matter untrammelled by Australian influences and to unite in forming a Methodist Church for the Dominion, enjoying complete selfgovernment, and thus prepare for a union of the evangelical churches in a national church. Further, in view of all circumstances, more especially centenary efforts now being made, it would be unwise to disturb our people by submitting the question of union to them at the present juncture. Mr, D, Goldie seconded the amendment in a vigorous speech. After Mr. Goldie s remarks the closure was applied. The amendment was carried bv 51) to 13. '
