Tta Maknwhai Welter Handicap. . ?** '""on at Kanp'tikpi bv the consistent Officer The Sfake w openly described as "a deadly race." The nding of George Price was about as reckless as it could possibly have been and the incident is referred to in wathing terms by "Petronel" in the tteeldy Press, who wries as follows *Tb« Rangitikei racecourse possess rawer an unenviable reputaton. Rarely doe* a meeting take place there without •ome objectionable happening in regard to nding. Jockeys ride there who ride on other racecourses, and well-known jockeys are the ones that get into trouble. On the first day of the recent meeting George Price, the well-known light-weight, was fined £lO for boring. It was alleged that Price, who was riding Flotilla—the favorite—cut right across the course from the outside, so interfering with Probability that the latter nearly came down. It was also alleged that Price subsequently bored ITie Stake on the rails. The* public give rent to a hostile demonstration against Price when he returned to scale. The stewards took the evidence of the boys riding in the race, and ultimately fined the offender £lO. Price, when before the stewards, said the interferawe with The Stake was not intentional, ind that he had to keep his mount moving or the public would have said he was not tmng. As regards Probability, the litters rider, Whitenonse, said that the mare stumbled. The stewards, therefore, accepted this explanation, and absolved Price from blame on this count We know that jockeys will stick together, and endeavor to sare each other from punishment as far as they possibly can. But in this ease, what did the steward? themselves see! Owners and trainers who were along the straight aver that the Probability Incident looked very bad. Indjed. one trainer, who apparently saw Flotilla charging on Probability, yelled "Murder f n at the top of his voice. The Ktsgitikei stewards have before now been charged with being very tolerant of things that ought not to be allowed to go unchallenged. In the present case they held an enquiry and administered punishment which in many quarters is not considered sufficient. A good deal happened during the racing which called for some enquiry, so I am informed, and really it is this failure to act on the part of honorary stewards which makes the demand for stipendiary stewards fnore persistent day by day." The erst-Xew Zealand racehorse Melodeon distinguished himself in the AJ.C. Handicap (one mile and a-quarter), run at Rand wick on Boxing Bay. The son of Medallion carried Set lib to victory in the good time of 2min 9%sec,, beating a field of ten in fine style. Melodeon started favorite.
The Perth Cap of 2000sovs., run On the 28th nit., was won by Mr P. A. Connelly's colt Port Town (by Posltano). Mr Ooiraolly has the remarkable record of famishing the winner of the Perth Cop in four successive year*. Maranui was a starter In the Carnngton Stakes, the principal event at Tatter«all's meeting on December 23th. There were twenty-three mnner». nnd lord Merv was sent out a red-hot favorite and flattered his supporters as the field ran into the straight. At the Hiero came through and won comfortably br a couple 0 f lengths from Artful, with Kyadgerie the name distance away third. Maranni ran up well and was ju«t outside a place.
