j CHINESE SUFFERING FROM ' BERRIBERRI. ! Received Jan. 9, 9.18 p.m. ' Sydney, January 9. 1 The steamer Borderer, bound from ' Vancouver to South Africa, put in to Sydney with five Chinese members of the crew suffering from berriberri. A sixth succumbed. [Berriberri, or ''beriberi," is an Eastern disease. It is marked by anemia, paralyse, and dropsical symptoms.] A QUEER AFFAIR. Sydney, January 9. The steamer Queen Helena, from Ho- I nolnlu, while passing the small island of Sophia, supposed to be uninhabited, saw four men on the beach. /The steamer hove-to, and for some hours the crew made signals, but no response was made. The Helena then proceeded on her voyage. THE PLAGUE. Brisbane, January 9. A fatal case of plague has occurred hftre. The victim was a man who had been working on a coal hulk.
