VETERAN'S RELIEF FUND.
HANDSOME SUBCRIPTIONS. . Received Dtli, 10.10 p.m. London, January 1). The Queen has subscribed 000 guineas towards the veterans' relief fund. Other contributions include—Prince of Wales 250 guineas, Viscount Ivcagh, Sir Ernest C'aasel, the Duke of Bedford, and the proprietor of the Daily Telegraph 1000 guineas each. The Daily Telegraph, referring to the recent commemorative jubilee banquet to veterans of the Indian Mutiny at the Albert Hall, drew special attention to the fact that many of them came from the workhouses and returned thither. It declared that the nation must rescue these old soldiers from their sad fate, and remove the reproach that now attaches to Great Britain of forgetting the men of humble rank who fought and bled for her honor. In 1897, Diamond Jubilee year, a fund for the relief of survivors of the Light Brigade charge at Balaclava was founded by Mr T. H. Roberts. There were then fifty-two men alive. On October 26th last the annual Balaclava matinee was held at the Alhambra, when out of twenty-six still living only about a dozen were able to attend.
