FANNING ISLAND.
FATHER KOXjilK^'S Received Jan. 8, 4.55 p.m, Loudon, Januaiy B. Confirmation has been received that Father Rongier, head of the Marist missions at Suva, lias purchased Fanning Island. The Pacific Cable Board think it will be advantageous if Father Rongier sends settlers to the island.
AN EXPLANATION. Per Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In reference ,to a cable message from London regarding the sale of Fanning Island, Mr Humphry Berkeley, who arrived in Wellington from Sydeny to-day, explained that Father Rougier purchased Fanning and Washington Mandator him. Mr Berkeley was formerly owner . of half of these islands, and now pom sesses the whole of them ,wlth the exceptioi) of the portioq (m which thq cable station st&pds.
