The Department oi Industries and Commerce lias received the following cable, from the High Commissioner at London, dated January 4th:—
l-Yozeri me.it. —New Zealand mutton is in veiy limited supply, but the market is weak and inactive, as there are large supplies of River Plate mutton, which is being strongly pushed for sale at 3d per lb. No immediate change in the market is expected. Current quotations arc:—Canterbury 3%d, North Island 3»/ ai Australian 2y„d. Australian lamb is in large supply, but is of very! mixed quality. It is quoted at 4%d. There is a good demand for prime quality lamb. The beef market remains very flat. Supplies of River Plate beef are heavy. New Zealand beef is quoted at 3%d for hindquarters. Butter The market remains firm, and there is a general and active deimand. Light shipments are expected. Choicest New Zealand 119s, Australian 110s, Argentine 117f>, Danish 1245, Siberian 112s. Cheese —The market remains firm with an upward tendency. White make flls, colored 62s per cwt. Hemp—The market is steady, but market prospects are uncertain and transactions are moderate. Good fair grade on the spot £2B 10s, fair grade In same position £27 10s. January to March shipments: Good fair grade £27 10s, fair grade £27. Fair current Manila £29 per ton. Cocksfoot seed —The market is very firm, and no immediate change is expected. There are light stocks on hand. The quotation is 70s per cwt. for 171b bright dressed seed. > Wool There is better demand for wool. Prices are firm.
