WESTLAND MEETING. Per Press Association. Hokitika, Saturday Night. The Wcstland Racing Club's second day's results wore:— Gohlslmrough Handicap.—Salaam 1, Whakatane 2. Sylverie 3. Telegraph Handicap.—Adria 1, Numa 2, Investment 3. Summer Handicap Trot—Richard E. 1, Victoria 2. Ohura 3. Hokitilca Handicap.—Monkey Puzzle 1. Vardo 2, Freeland 3. Rimu Handicap Trot.-Glcn 1. Richard E. 2 Mawhera 3. Welter Weight Handicap.— Wairarapa 1, Sweethill 2, Blessbok S. Final Handicap.—Coxswain 1, Victoria Park 2. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). The following were the principal winning owners at ths Stratford meeting:— Messrs A. Rhodes £lO5, H. Fryer £IOO S. Pitt.' £IOO, F. 11. Lambert £OS, C O'Sullivan £OO, Miss Dempster £«0, Messrs Hikaka £OO, W. Tucker £SO F. C. Faber £45, E. Unklc £35, J. Fitzgerald £35, B. Rowe £25, G. Clareburt £25, and C. Millcn £25.
T. Jones, McNaniara and C. Cochrane rode two winners apiece in the gallops, and J. Butler rode the winners of the trotting events. Clarelmrt, fryer, Stanley, Scott, Jackson, Lind, Mr C. Matthaws, and Mr A. Mitchell rode one winner each. Mr Alex. Mitchell, who rode Miki: tahi to victory in the Ladies' Purse, won the same race last year on Toddy. In each case Dr. Paget "Steered the runnerup. As forecasted in these columns a„week or two ago, the Stratford meeting was somewhat of a consolation one, no fewer than six horses, Lady Menschikoff, Immolation, Golden Eagle, Miss Vera, Glengariff, and St. Claimer, who ran unsuccessfully at the Taranaki gathering earned winning Brackets at Stratford. Immolation, who ran tip well at the local races, succeeded in catching the judge's eye in the Stratford Cup, but had the riders of Rosegrove and Uhlando taken Immolation's chance seriously, it is extremely doubtful whether the Spinfeldt gelding would have paid a dividend in that race. Singlet, who contested the Trial Handicap Trot, bore a very washed-out appearance. A tipster told this scribe before the opening event at Stratford that Dear Dolly would "simply walk in." And so she did, being left standing at the post. ■She simply walked into the saddling paddock! Last year the Trial Trot was won by All Night; this year by Early Morli. What price "Breakfast-time" next year? - The three-year-old colt Mer'riwee gelding Truganini finished up gamely in the Railway Handicap, but had Dear Dolly and Iseult got away well Truganini would not have been in the hunt. Lady Menschikoff broke her duck in the Borough Stakes, and the daughter of Menschikoff should pay her way this season.
Mallet, by Mslatua-Paiiline, is coming on. and .should score soon. Golden Eagle was in fine form aft Stratford, and with ordinary ] uc k might have won a double. A slow be gamng spoilt her chance in the Final Handicap, but she was catching St Claimer very fast at the finish. *Ji* }J Ta ' h a nico cut of a filly, ?e n r\t"Lr eag0 ° dad ™ rtiß ™^ a ll h<! , Pl T ny 0f St - dements can skin along! The Sou'-Wosfer gcldin" has ' now won five time* out of six starts. and. up to six furlong, is probablv the fastest horse in the Dominion. There is some talk of taking him over to Australia for the Newmarket Handicap. hut he would lie certain to tret a heavy impost. All the Son'-Wcsters can jump, and his dam (Swift) wa.s a fine iH'iformer over sticks, so there is no reason why Dusky Morn should not earn fame across the hattens also. Zimmerman was ihe hero of the
