A FIRE AND THEFT.
AN ARREST MADE. • __ Per Press Association. Whangarei, Last Night. A three-roomed cottago with contents at Kiripaka was destroyed by fire at midnight on Wednesday. A family named Olsen, living next door, attended the fire and returned home to find that money amounting to £l7O in notes and gold had been abstracted from a drawer during their absence. Yesterday evening the police arrested Nicholas Maddren, son-in-law of Mrs. Olsen, who was visiting the family. An amount corresponding with the sum stolen was found on him. Accused was charged at the Whangarei Police Court to-day and remanded till Monday. The police are of opinion that, the lire was deliberately started, and connect it with the theft.
