A HUGE CANAL SCHEME. Rome, December 3U. Cominiula, n Milanese engineer, lias planned a canal from Genoa to Luke Constance to cross the Appeuines and the, Alps. It would admit GOU-ton vessels! Existing waterways would he utilised for 101 miles of the 301) miles necessary. [Lake Constance is on the northern boundary of Switzerland, the Rhine Mowing in at its South-eastern extremity and issuing at a western point. The I opening of the Canal would give a waterway from the Rhine mouth on the Xortli Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. The Rhine, however, is not navigable right through to Lake Constance, owing to Ihe falls near Schaffhauscn. Navigation begins at Basel. The. Rhine is already connected l>y canals with the Danube, Rhone, and Marne.]
