A fine point has been reserved for decision by the Full Federal Court as to what constitutes a telegram. Is the message that is handed in by liiown that received by Jones It ocean, dto the judges that it. really required both the message received to constitute one materia? wire. The point at issue is whether through the reading of the telegram by the receiving clerji or operator which was not too clearly deciphered and resulted in a different meaning 1 being conveyed, who was responsible for the ultimate actions of the receiver of the wire which were contrary to the intention of the sender arising by reason of the said wording liein« mis-real? The High Court would not dceidc_<ifThand whether the responsibility should be placed on the sender or the Telegraph Department. Modern education correlates subjects. A lad who gets puzzled over an arithmetic sums solves it by aid of algebra. Historical questions relating to battles are freipiently elucidated by eulagorical details of the geographical surroundings of the field of battle. But the latest is the. analogy of temperance and arithmetic. According to the -New South Wales Teacher and Tutorial Guide, the following letter was sent to a country teacher:—''Sir,—Will you in future give my boy easier soms to do at nite? This is" what he's brought hoam two or three nites hack. If lour gallons of beer will fill thirty-to pint bottles, how many pints and half bottles would nine gallons of here fill? Well, we tried, and could make nothing out of it at all, and my hoy cried and laughed, and sed he didn't dare to go back in the morning without doing it. So I had to go and liny a nine gallon keg of here, which I
could ill afford to do, and then he went and borrowed a lot of brandy bottles. We tilled them, and my boy put the number down as an answer. I don't know whether it is right or not, as wo spilt some while doing it. P.S.—Please let the next som l>e in writer, as am not able to buy more here."
Several complaints have been made recently aljout the advertising locals appearing in the local Press. People reading a spicy news item swear silently perhaps when they find that the paragraph is designed only to advertise the fete in the Recreation Sports Ground on New Year's Day. There is little to he said in favor of this stylo of advertising, except that it is likely to bring together the biggest crowd ever seen in New Plymouth.
