Per Press Association. [ Wellington, Friday. Word has been received in Wellington that a single leaf of the original journal kept by Cauuun Cook on his first voyage to Australia has turned up in London. A facsimile of the leaf has reached Wellington. (This is considered a particularly interesting find, fiiasniuch as it clears up what has hitherto been a matter of mystery among Australian historians. When Cook was first at Botany Bay he named it Stingray Bay. The name was subsequently altered to
Botany Bay, and it was supposed the change vms made by spmo later visitors than Cook himself. But in the leat from his original-journal which has just been discovered the bay is called Botanists' Bay, so it is apparent that Cook himself made the change. John Chalkcr, who escaped from cusr I tody at Palmerston North on December 14th, was re-arrcsted in Wellington last night. ' 1 Gisbornc, Friday. " Some time ago it was reported that How Chow, a wealthy Chinaman, had left Gisbornc on a visit to China and had disappeared. It was 'believed that flu had been captured by bandits, nis wife, a European woman, went to China and made an unsuccessful search for him. News lias now been received from How Chow nt Hongkong, stating that he had been held for a year for ransom, lit is now free. , r
