NEW ZEALAND AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.

SEVENTH ANNUAL CHAMPIuNSHIES. SECOND DAY. c The concluding day of the Axemen's Carnival at Elthuni was held under , ideal weather conditions yesterday. The sun jioured out its intense heat, which, however, was nicely tempered by a southerly breeze, the latter being fully appreciated alike by competitors and the public generally. The attendance was good, but not i(uite so large as on the second day of lust year's carnival. The aggregate gate takings, however, were ill excess of any previous carnival, evidence that wood-sawing and chopping contests are not waning In favor with the public. The Eltliam Axemen's Carnival is now looked upon as one of (lie big gala daya of the province. All the arrangements at the carnival were well carried, out, aud nothing happened yesterday to in any way mar the proceedings. A better lot of officials could not be found, and this is saying a good deal when it is remembered the amount of detail work that is entailed in the successful carrying out of an axemen's carnival. The Eltliiuii_Brass Band added harmony to the proceedings. There were several side-shows on the ground, ' into which the public were enchanted by > the flowery vocabulary of the "man on the box."
