NEW ZEALAND AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.

SEVENTH ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. The; seventh iiimual championship carnival of the New Zealand Axemen's Association, which opened at tjlham yesterday, eclipsed ail previous record ,n almost every respect. The ueiuliei | was simply glorious, and the attendant, the largest in the history oi the Association, it being estimated that over -IUUU people were on the the ground. Crowd ed excursion trains from .Xew Plymouth and Hawera arrived aUuul noon, amply justifying the Association's claim to be better catered for by tile railways

than has been the case hitherto. The sum of Jdls2 was taken at the gules, and over £SO at the stands, establishing n record over that held by me carnival of three years ago, when tins Plane, tlie Terrys and oilier prominent Australians provided the attraction. The sport provided yesterday was good, the absence of Mi ley Wave Pretty, Charlie liuttou, Con Casey, aim other erstwhile champions leaving the events more open. ' Some splendid work was put in Iby the "mighty men of muscle," j but no records were broken. I The cycle raring provided -some I capital sport,, splendid Holds lacing the ! starter in each event. A. I'urkos easily demonstrated his superiority over the rest of the provincial riders, and pus- | sesses a younger brother who promise.'

to develop into a lop-notcher. Some dissatisfaction was expressed regarding the placing of tlie judges in sonic of the heats in the underhand event, it seemed to onlookers that lh 0 judges' stand was badly placed for judging such an event, and unless remedied, mistakes such as occurred yesterday must recur. Some apprehension has been felt regarding the cll'oet of the operation of the new (samI ing Act, which forbids bookmaking on sports grounds, but yesterday's success, if it demonstrates anything, should provt

that the innovation is appreciated, and the legislation approved by the general public. The officials, groundsmen, committee, judges, timekeepers, and especially the secretary, Mr F. R Ilanly, j carried out their duties assiduously, and I there were no unnecessary waits. Tlie I Eltliam Hand, resplendent in new unij forms, supplied a well-selected and enjoyable programme of music on the lawn. Results: — Maiden Chop, llijn blocks; "£5, £1 10s,
