TL'RF TOPICS. (Ry "Moturoa"). Local peiicillcrs are very wrath at the action of the Taraiiaki Jockey Club in demanding the limit of JI2U per day for a bookmaker's license, at the lorliicoming meeting. Evidently they •do not want the bookmaker with his racous voice, and the reason is known to no one better than to the pencillers themselves. For years past the club has consistently fought the layer o£ odds and a large number of tile latter individuals, although I might say iu fairness to a few of our present ''books" —not all of them—have assumed mi air of insolence and hauteur and, disregarding all warning, have presented tneinselves on the local course and delied the Club to have them removed. They tave put the club to a deal of annoyance and expense, and have made themselves decidedly objectionable, pnd it: is not to be wondered at that the powers that be have made the license fees as stiff as possible. The remedy, of course, lies with the odds merchantsTheir ranks in the past have not been altogether free from shady persons, and they should lose no time in forming a union and putting themselves on a respectable footing, and the Racing Conference would quickly settle the matter of license fees. As I said before, the twenty pound fee is fairly stiff for decent bookmakers, but the good are now suffering for the mis-deeds of the bad. Applications for bookmakers' licenses must reach the secretary of the Taranaki .T.C. before noon to-day. Conditions upon which bookmakers' licenses will be issued are advertised in this issue. ,' '■ >£; The local racecourse is in fine order at present, the lawns and saddling partook looking splendid, nnd their bright appearance reflects credit upon the earstaker. Most of tile horses engaged in events on the opening day of the T..T-C. Christmas meeting are striding along well, and T will have something further to say nn their appearances to-morrow. Owners are again reminded that ac- ; eeptnncos for the first day's events and entries for the Borough Stakes. Cardiff [ Stakes anil the Farmers' Plate, nl |l,c Stratford meeting close tn-night at 0 p.m.
As winners at the Taranaki Christmas meeting will carry penalties at Stratford, the latter will he somewhat of a consolation meeting, and it is tn be hoped that owners who now have their horse? in good nick will give them n run at the New Year rnees and will send in their aeeeptanee fees to-night. Only fmiT bookmakers have tntfenTrnt licenses to lay the fields at the Manawatn meeting, namely. Jfcssrs Bert Campion. Pol. Lewis. \V. V. Whitta, and C. Pulley. The ehief reison apparently for the withdrawal of those who had already applied for licenses was the refusal to allow the Bookmakers to het after the totalisat.or has closed. 1 Thirty-three bookmakers have applied ■ for licenses to the Auckland Racing Chin.
