CROPPING STATISTICS.
i'er Press Association, Wellington, Last Night. : A special Gazette lias beon issued containing the following information: The collection of'the statistics began on 14th October, awl continued until Oth November. The following ib an interim return of the acreage under corn and green crops, and the amount of grain on land: —
Wheat: Area, returned for threshing in 1907-8, 192,684 acres; 1006-7, 210,758 acres, a decrease of 18,074 acres. The areas returned under the heading for "chaffing," "ensilage," and "feeding d|own", tfor 1907-8 is 837 acres; for--1906-7, 813 acres, up increase of 24 acres. Total decrease, 18,050 acres. ~"
Oats: Area returned for threshing in 1907-8, 380,626 acres; 1900-7, 371,974 acres, an increase of 14,652 acres. The areaa returned under the headings for "chaffing," "enßilage," and "feeding down," 1907-8, 291,016 acres; JBO6-7, 259,469 acres, an increase of 48,109 acres. ' <
The following table shows the increases and decreases in acreage for the year in respect to the crops dealt with in this return:—
Increases—Oats, 46,199 acres j barley, 4,041 acres; rye, 1678 acres; acres; witches or tares, 97 acres; other corn crops, 309 acres; turnips, 29,721 acres; mangolds, 2960 acres; rape, 28,808 acres; beet, 200 acres; carrots, 78 acres other green crops 4634 acres; showing a total increase of 110,525 acres.
Decreases—Wheat, 18050 acres; peas, -2906 acres; beans, 841 .acres; Unseed, 012 acres; hops, 150 acres; potatoes, 4436 acres; total decrease, 26,995 acres; -and a net increase of 02,530 acres.
